I was searching on the net for regency portaits when I stumbled upon this very simple but very effective and useful pattern for a Regency cravat.
FREE CRAVAT PATTERN
-
Cut 1.5 yards white linen. Keep the selvage edge smooth.
-
Fold in half lengthwise.
-
Measure 10 inches on the fold and cut. This will give you an isosceles triangle, 55″ x 10″.
-
Hand sew a narrow hem on the slanted edges – the selvage edge is already finished.
-
Spray starch and iron.

I am so confused with the directions on this pattern. I found it too but I do not understand how the finished cravat looks. How is it an isosceles triangle? Sounds like it is a 20 in rectangle folded in half to me. Help.

To be honest it confuses me as well. I normally make a structured cravat as most actors can’t tie them successfully themselves.
I will have a try and see if I can’t come up with a better pattern.

This “free cravat pattern” is frequently mentioned online but is extraordinarily confusing. The directions to “fold lengthwise”, “measure 10″ on the fold”, and “cut” don’t make sense at all. How wide is the piece of fabric? The cutting directions don’t seem to produce an isosceles triangle. The instructions suggest the finished shape of the cravat is a 10″ X 55″ X 55″ triangle (in which case there are no selvage edges), but how would one tie such a cravat? Please John, find a better pattern!
